The North Ballarat Sports Club recently held its Annual General Meeting, bringing together members and supporters to reflect on the past year and recognise the incredible people who continue to drive our club forward.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of our highest honour, with Stephen McNulty inducted into the Hall of Fame. This prestigious recognition celebrates Stephen’s outstanding contribution, dedication, and lasting impact on the club.

We were also proud to award Life Memberships to several individuals who have given years of service and commitment to North Ballarat:

Prue Douglass – Life Member (absent on the night)

Life Membership recognises those who have gone above and beyond for the club, and we thank them for the passion and time they have invested in the North community.

Girls Auskick and Superkick Programs

Join us on Friday 13th for the start of the girls Auskick and Superkick seasons.

For girls aged 4-7, the nab AFL Auskick program is a great way to introduce them to the sport. Grass stains are guaranteed as we teach skills through fun activities and mini games.

For girls aged 7-12, the Superkick program is a tackle-free and perfect for Auskick grads and newbies alike.

Join us on Friday afternoons at 4:30 , starting on Friday 13th February at Ballarat High School.

Sports Trainer Course - Level 1

With the 2026 Footy & Netball Season not far away, we wanted to let you know that RAD will be running a Level 1 Sports Trainer course on the 13th and 14th of March.

This is a perfect opportunity for those members of the North Ballarat Football and Netball club community that may be looking to get their sports trainer qualification to help support the club during the 2026 season.

This course will provide the Sports Trainer with the skills and knowledge to provide a first aid response in a sporting environment.

The Level 1 Sports Trainer Course will be held in Ballarat on Friday the 13th March from 5:30pm to 8:30pm and Saturday the 14th March from 8am to 1pm at the RADcentre at 989 Norman Street, Wendouree 3355.

The course costs $295.

Sam played junior and senior football at the club, playing a total of 114 games before going on to have a successful career in the VFL for Collingwood. Sam played 80 VFL games and was the VFL Captain for Collingwood in 2024 and 2025. He was named in the VFL Team of the Year in 2024 and 2025 and has returned to Ballarat this year to settle here with his family.

Sam is also a qualified physiotherapist and conducts these junior clinics to help players improve their skills and get the most out of their football.

At the BFNL AGM, our very own Prue Douglass was officially inducted as the first-ever female Life Me mbe r of the Ballarat Football Netball League .

This honour is a true reflection of Prue’s unwavering dedication, leadership, and lifelong commitment to netball both within our region and right here at North Ballarat.

Prue already holds one of the league’s most prestigious recognitions, with the BFNL 17 & Under Best and Fairest Medal named in her honour: The Prue Douglass Best & Fairest Award

Her impact on generations of players continues to shape the future of our sport.

We are incredibly proud of Prue and deeply grateful for the support of her family, Tony and Poppy, who have been part of this journey every step of the way.

We’re excited to announce that Josh Morris has re-committed to North Ballarat for the 2026 season.

He joined the Roosters and capped off a tremendous debut season by winning the Stott-Eyres Senior Best & Fairest Medal in his first year at the club.

His impact was immediate - and undeniable.

Josh brings with him an impressive resume:

Former Hawthorn AFL player (2020–2023) with 15 AFL games
37 VFL games for Box Hill
Played for Woodville West-Torrens in the SANFL in 2024

Standing at 186cm, Josh is a fast-leading, dangerous forward known for his acceleration, foot skills, smart decision-making and consistency.

Josh’s re-signing is a massive boost for our 2026 campaign and we can’t wait to see what he delivers next.

Maddie brings a wealth of experience from both her playing and coaching career, having achieved success at the highest levels of state competition.

The North Ballarat community is absolutely thrilled to welcome Sam Glover and his wife Bella back to our club for 2026 and beyond!

Sam isn’t just known as a top-quality player – he’s a brilliant clubman and leader whose respect for teammates, supporters, and the game itself sets the standard. Whenever Sam has returned to the club – whether as a spectator or player – he’s shown what being part of the North family is all about.

2025 Lorna Bromley Best Club Person Award

Calling all Northies!

The Club needs your help with nominations for the 2025 Lorna Bromley Best Club Person Award!

This award is in recognition of Lorna Bromley, a name that has long been synonymous with North Ballarat and recognises a person who shows exemplary dedication & commitment for the betterment of our Club.

Lorna was a supporter of the club starting in 1946 as a 16 year old. Lorna lived on the farm next door to the ground with her family and remained there until 2007. Lorna’s brothers, husband and subsequent family members all played at the club. Lorna served as President of the Ladies Committee from 1980 until the Ladies Committee ceased to continue at the club as its own entity.

Lorna worked tirelessly in the canteen, at our Thursday night ‘Ins and Outs’ dinners and wherever help was needed. Lorna epitomized the culture of the club and was fiercely loyal, regarding it as her extended family.

When making your nomination, think of a person who demonstrates the commitment & love for the Club, in the spirit of Lorna Bromley.

Floody turns 75!

This great man turns 75 today!

Congratulations "Floody" (also known as “Floodman”, but christened "Ian" by his parents). Floody has been a fixture at our club for pretty much all of those 75 years – a very funny man and friend to all.

He has a swathe of North honours – Hall of Famer, Life Member, 221 Senior Club Games, Best Clubman (1975), Reserves Best and Fairest (1979 and 1982) … the list goes on! He’s the living definition of a true Northie and we love him to bits.

HAVE A RIPPER FLOODY! Thanks for all you've done for us over the years.

Fun fact: Floody has a twin sister, Patricia Finn (pictured with him), so we send our best wishes to Pat from the North family today as well!

The North Ballarat family is sad to advise of the death of former Board Member Wayne Strong, who passed away recently at his home in Spain.

Wayne was a long-serving member of both the North Ballarat Football Club and the North Ballarat Sports Club, and we acknowledge his outstanding service over many years to both the sporting and business arms of our club.

We extend our sincere condolences to Wayne’s family and friends.

Reverting to the Original Club Song

Dear Northies,

I am writing to you to advise that the NBFNC Board has resolved to revert to our Original Club Song.

Recently we had feedback about the appropriateness of using "WE WILL ROLL THEM IN THE MUD AND COVER THEM IN BLOOD" in our Club Song. In summary, the concern was that given our contemporary understanding and abhorrence of family violence and generally any violence - these lines were jarringly inconsistent with the values of contemporary society and of our Club.

When reading our Club History Book - 'From Gumboots to Glory' and refer to page 211 of the book our original Club Song is shown:

IT'S ONLY NOW WE'RE COMING INTO FORM, INTO FORM

The word ‘BOYS' will be deleted from the original song and the people singing the song can choose to insert

their one word gender accordingly or not at all.

The Club song on the Website will be updated to reflect the new Club Song , as will Club Song signage around the Club - both Football and Netball.

Dear North Ballarat FNC Family,

As the President of our great club, I want to thank you all for your ongoing support of the North Ballarat Football and Netball Club. Our community thrives because of the dedication of our players, families, and volunteers.

Right now, we’re in need of some extra hands in our Senior Canteen. Unfortunately, the same small group of volunteers has been carrying a heavy load, and we’re reaching out to ask for your help.

Here’s the good news: if we get enough volunteers, you might only need to help once a season. Just one shift a year can make a huge difference when we all pitch in.

Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, past player, or supporter, giving a couple hours of your time helps fund vital club programs and keeps things running smoothly on game days. It’s also a great way to connect with the club community and support our teams.

How to volunteer: Contact Lee at manager@northballaratfnc.com.au to let us know you’re happy to help. We’ll work with you to find a time that suits. We also have an online roster which you can log onto and put your name in one of the spots for the day. The link and further information is below.

This special match honours the life and legacy of Rachael, a cherished member of our North Ballarat family, and shines a light on the importance of wellness in our club and community.

Our Senior football & netball cohort will also be playing on Saturday. Our only dual gate game for the year.

Standing at 186cm, Josh is a fast-leading, dangerous forward known for his acceleration, skills, and decision-making. With his aerial ability and marking prowess, he’ll be a key target in our forward line, consistently providing us an avenue to goal.

Senior Coach Clint Proctor shared his thoughts on Josh, saying: "He’s an incredibly talented player with great hands and a beautiful kick. On top of that, he’s a fantastic person, and we’re thrilled to have him join the club."

New Coach Announcement

North Ballarat Football Netball Club is thrilled to announce the appointment of former Box Hill VFL coach Clint Proctor as its Senior Football Coach for seasons 2025 and 2026.

Proctor comes to North as an accomplished coach at VFL, TSL and NAB League levels. He worked as an assistant under Sam Mitchell in the VFL prior to taking over as the VFL Box Hill coach in 2022. Proctor has a strong emphasis on player development and club culture.

NBFNC Director of Football Michael Ryan said the club had undertaken a rigorous recruitment process to secure a new coach, with a number of quality applicants in the mix.

He said Proctor had demonstrated through that process that he had the values as well as the skills that aligned with club philosophy and approach.

“We pride ourselves on the way we develop our players, particularly through the junior program and into seniors, and we believe Clint is well placed with his experience to continue to drive that for us.”

Proctor said he was thrilled to be joining a club of the calibre of North Ballarat.

“I'm incredibly proud to be coaching North Ballarat Football Netball Club, a club with such a rich history and great standing in the community. I'm looking forward to working with the playing group, not just to coach but to educate and develop them as athletes and individuals, building on the strong foundation that this club represents."

Proctor is Chief Executive Officer of Badminton Victoria and will continue in that role alongside his duties at North.

North's pre-season will commence in November, with date to be advised shortly.

The North Ballarat Football Netball Club are saddened to advise members of the passing of Life Member, Ms Sue Bromley.

Sue has made a significant contribution to our club over many years, following in the footsteps of her beloved mother Lorna Bromley. In recent years, Sue has been out Senior Canteen Manager, and her friendly face & sense of humour were enjoyed by all who worked with her.

She will be dearly missed.

The North Ballarat Football Netball Club community extends its sympathies to Gemma, Adam, Ivy and River, Jenny, Dizzy, Jess, Sam, Josh and Tom, Garry, Ros, Shaun, Lisa and Ricky, and the extended Bromley, Lockett, and Turley families.

SUE BROMLEY OBITUARY

The death of NBFNC life member Sue Bromley on 30 August this year touched the hearts of all members of the North Ballarat family.

Sue died unexpectedly, aged 64, after a lifetime associated with the club, dating back to her childhood when her parents Dudley and Lorna Bromley (a Hall of Fame member) were ardent North supporters and active contributors themselves.

Sue started volunteering with North as a teenager in the 1970s, working alongside her mother in the canteen in the old Creswick Road clubrooms and serving support at bingo at the Civic Hall. Lorna was president of the Ladies Committee for many years and Sue was a huge support in helping coordinate their numerous fundraising activities.

In the early 2000s Sue helped the remaining members of the Ladies Committee to embrace 21st century food handling processes, supporting each of them to obtain their Safe Handling of Food certificates - no easy feat given the course was online and most of the Ladies Committee were unfamiliar with the workings of the world wide web! And of course, these ladies had given many years of service (and cooking) without the need for a piece of paper to vouch for their credentials!

At the same time, Sue encouraged a new crop of volunteers to step up and support the growth of the club, which by that stage included a Roosters VFL team, the Rebels, a growing junior division as well as a new netball division.

Sue’s loyalty to the North Ballarat Football Club was unquestionable. While blessed with a daughter, Gemma, she had no children playing at the club but continued to support in any way she could, including catering for junior and senior finals, for special events, Ladies Day, presentation evenings - Sue was always in the mix making sure everyone was well looked after. She was a loud and proud supporter of her nephews, Josh, Sam and Tom Bromely-Lynch, as well as her son-in-law Adam Turley.

In recent years, Sue was our Senior Canteen Coordinator and many of our club members - including netballers and footballers - had the pleasure of volunteering alongside her. Sue took a particular interest in the players and was always keen for an update on how they were travelling. Her death came as a particular shock to regular volunteers Trear, Mandy, Jack and Shirley and Sports Club kitchen staff, who she worked closely with. Sue’s canteen volunteers always appreciated the messages of thanks she sent them after a shift in the canteen.

Sue continued a Bromley tradition of volunteering and loyalty to North with no expectation of reward or fanfare. Earlier this year, when Sue was made a life member of the club, her family had to tell her a little “porky pie” to get her along to the presentation. And in true Sue form, she dropped the “F Word” when she was announced as a life member. Good on you Sue!

Sue is survived by her daughter Gemma and son-in-law Adam Turley, a current player with our club, and their children Ivy and River.

Her sister Jenny Bromely is a life member and former club president. Nephew Tom Bromley-Lynch is a current player.

Her extended family, including the Locketts, and her many friends at North Ballarat will miss her greatly.

Thank you Sue for your loyal and faithful service to our club.

During this time of the season there is a risk that some people’s passion for their club and mates can become too fervent with the result that statements can be made on social media which doesn’t portray yourself or the North Ballarat FNC in the best manner.

It is requested that no one posts on social media, statements or comments which will potentially be misconstrued as being negative or aimed to cause harm and may be linked as coming from the North Ballarat FNC or individuals within the club.

North Ballarat FNC endorses the intent of the current community football social media policy, which is posted on the club website, under the club and resources section of the site, and will act according to it.

BRENDAN McCARTNEY TO DEPART NORTH AFTER SUCCESSFUL FOUR YEARS

North Ballarat Football Netball Club has announced Senior Coach Brendan “Macca” McCartney will not return to the club next year.

McCartney advised the NBFNC Board this week that, after much deliberation, he had made the difficult decision to move on.

McCartney made the announcement to the playing group at training on Thursday night, confirming he remained committed to coaching them through the upcoming finals series.

Club President Richard Start said “Macca” would leave at the end of the season with the club’s utmost gratitude and respect.

“We have always known that a coach of Macca’s calibre would have opportunities beyond North Ballarat and, while we are sad to lose him, we are very supportive of him exploring full- time options to coach at a higher level,” said Club President Richard Start.

Under McCartney’s leadership over the past four years, North Ballarat has maintained a focus on the development of its younger players. Since joining North in 2021, 42 players have made their senior debuts and 30 of those have come through the club’s junior program.

“That’s a record we are very proud of and will be part of Macca’s legacy - the development of our young players and giving them the opportunity to play senior football,” Mr Start said.

Macca has taken the club to minor premiers in 2021, finals in 2022, the Grand Final in 2023 and the finals again this year.

Macca said he would take away “many fond memories” of his time at North.

“Many thanks to the North Ballarat Football and Netball Club for having me as their senior coach over the last four years. It’s been a great journey, and we will take away many new friends and fond memories. The club is in good hands and will continue to flourish as it has for a long time in the Ballarat community.”

The club will begin the search for a new coach immediately.

Statement on Finals Location

North Ballarat Football Netball Club acknowledges the BFNL's recent decision to host the 2024 Junior and Senior football and netball Grand Finals and Eastern Oval and City Oval.

It goes without saying that our club would have loved to have seen the grand finals back at Mars Stadium this year. Mars is the premier football/netball venue in western Victoria and it makes sense that the grand finals for the region's premier football and netball competition would be played there. Thanks to the significant investment of the State Government and the support of the City of Ballarat, Mars Stadium offers AFL-standard playing facilities for football, as well as two brand new state-of-the-art netball courts and dedicated change rooms. We are well set up to accommodate people with accessibility requirements and have ample parking in and around the precinct which means local traffic snarls are avoided. No other venue in the league offers all of that.

Contrary to popular belief, the North Ballarat Sports Club takes a hit to its revenue on grand final days, however, we have always accepted this comes secondary to ensuring Grand Final day is in equal parts a community success, a league success as well as a success for all clubs.

Our club has always been willing - and remains so - to work with the clubs who have catering rights to help them maximise their profits on the day. This includes us not selling alcohol from our can bar. What we can't do is breach our operating licence, which does place some restrictions on where others can sell alcohol from, but we have viable workarounds for this.

Ballarat is fortunate that it has numerous football grounds that are able to host football grand finals. However, Mars Stadium is the only venue that can do justice to both football AND netball at the highest of standards. For junior footballers in particular, the excitement of running up the same race that their AFL heroes do is second to none. We are disappointed for all the junior boys and girls who won't get to do that this year.

We will continue to advocate for what we firmly believe is the best location for BFNL grand finals for both football AND netball and look forward to welcoming players, supporters and sponsors from all BFNL clubs back to Mars.

2023 Gala Reunion Wrap Up

What a great day our annual Gala reunion was last Saturday 15th July. We welcomed back more than 100 past players and officials to North to celebrate no less than seven club premierships from 1963, 1973, 1983, 1993 and 2013.

The atmosphere in the room was amazing as old friends reunited and stories tall and true were told. Perhaps the highlight of the day was down in the rooms after the game, when everyone joined our Senior Footballers to sing the song after an impressive win over Ballarat Swans.

Not to be complacent with one rendition, the “old boys” sang a second time with gusto, much to the delight of the players. If you haven’t seen the video, you can watch it here. Make sure you sing along!

Brian O'Connor Obituary

North Ballarat Football Netball Club has lost a stalwart with the passing on July 1 of Life Member and former club president Brian O’Connor.

Brian died in his sleep at home on July 1.

His nephew David “Craft” Linane, is still a well-known identity around North and a current member of our Board.

Born in Springbank to John and Catherine O’Conner, Brian spent his formative years in and around Springbank and Gordon. He went to secondary school at St Patrick's College in Ballarat, where he became known for his sporting ability, in particular for his talents as a sprinter.

After finishing at St Patrick's in Form Five, Brian worked in the banking industry before moving to Melbourne to study accounting.

In 1959, he married Joan, who he described as “the love of his life”. Joan died in 2022.

Brian and Joan moved back to Ballarat in the 1970s and Brian worked at various dealerships before becoming dealer principal at SF Motors in 1972, where he stayed for 32 years.

An avid sportsman, Brian was recruited from YCA to North Ballarat in 1957. He played 154 senior games for North Ballarat and was a member of our 1959 grand final team. His teammates remember him as “a fast and elusive left footed wingman”.

He played football for North from 1957 to 1962, then had a short coaching stint at Creswick Football Club, before returning to North from 1965 to 1969.

His rap sheet for North includes:

1958 – Doug Richards Memorial Trophy for Senior Most Improved Player
1959 – Member of Senior Grand Final Team
1960 – Senior Best Position Player Trophy
1966 – George Newland Memorial Trophy for Seniors R/U B&F
1962 – 100 Game medal

1986 – Awarded NBFC Life Membership

Brian was invited to train with Geelong in the VFL, but the invitation didn’t translate to a VFL career- according to son Peter, his love for the Richmond Tigers would have meant he could never have pulled on a Cats guernsey.

Brian was president of North Ballarat Football Club in the mid-1970s and mid-1980s, when players such as the now-legendary Tony Lockett, Mick Malthouse and Val Perovic were making their mark.

He will be remembered as a kind and generous man, a bit of a "stirrer", and somebody who loved a good laugh.

Brian and Joan had five children - John, Peter, Vincent, Jacinta and Leesa.

John and both junior and senior football with North. John played 147 senior club games and Peter played 99.

Rest In Peace, Brian.

The North Ballarat Football Netball club is mourning the loss of one of its legends after Kevin Polkinghorne died aged 78.

The grandfather of one of the club's most prominent families, generations of Polkinghornes have graced the field for the Roosters.

Polkinghorne debuted for North Ballarat's seniors as a teenager after starring for the club's junior teams.

A premiership hero, Polkinghorne cemented himself in Roosters' folklore when he was named best on ground in their 1963 grand final triumph.

He went on to vice-captain the team in 1965 and 1966, and was made a life member after playing 115 games.

A talented player, Polkinghorne caught the attention of several Victorian Football League clubs, and trained with both Geelong and Carlton.

Polkinghorne's son Travis said while his father was a talented footballer, the sport was also a way for him to connect with people around him.

"It was a way he was able to be involved with us kids and relate to us, a lot of that was through football," he said.

"That's where most of his friendships, especially the enduring ones, have been formed and continued."

Despite Polkinghorne's rich playing career, arguably his greatest contribution to the club, was the way he turned it into a giant extended family.

His sons John, Grant and Travis all played for North Ballarat and have followed in their father's footsteps by being named best on ground in grand final wins.

Polkinghorne also had 10 grandchildren, who have all represented North Ballarat football or netball sides.

Travis said one of his father's proudest moments was seeing three of his grandsons, Riley Polkinghorne, Ryan Polkinghorne and Brock Leonard represent the Roosters.

Outside of his own playing career, Travis said coaching an under-16s boys to premiership glory was a highlight of his dad's time at the club.

"He always said, 'I taught them how to play like men, and actually taught them to be senior footballers,'" Travis said.

"His most proud part was quite a few of them went on to be senior footballers for North, and a couple even ended up with AFL experience."

North Ballarat club historian Stanley Roberts said Polkinghorne was a pivotal figure at the Roosters for more than half a century.

Northies proud to wear indigenous strip

North Ballarat Football Netball Club’s senior players were proud to wear the club’s indigenous strip for the annual Doug Nicholls Round in 2023.

The jumper and netball dress were designed by Gunditjmara artist Joey Chatfield, father of current senior player Josh Chatfield. It was first worn by the club in 2022.

“The top of the design represents the nets used for hunting birds and fish,” Joey said, “The idea behind that is to hunt the opposition and have that mindset when we are playing.” On the side of the strips is a shape resembling an arc, which Joey said represents the sun. “The line running across the jumper is a war bench, a design traditionally used on shields for combat. We see the symbolism in this as we go out and compete as a club.” Two “u” shapes at the bottom of the designs represent senior coaches Brendan McCarney and Annical McCartin, one with a football and one with a netball beside them. “The arches on the right side of the design represent the people around the club - the coaches, the committee, the supporters and anyone else who makes the club who we are.”

Within the design, there are two sets of dots - 22 in one set and 10 in the other. They represent the 22 players in a football team and 10 players in a netball team.

There are also goanna, kangaroo and emu tracks within the design.

On the back of the jumper, within the outlines of the war bench, are footprints that represent the journey that we are all on, whether that be on the football field, the netball court or in life. That back arches again represent our people, with the four dots within the arches representing each quarter in a game.

Thanks Joey for giving us a design that speaks to who we are as a club. We certainly do wear it with pride.

North Ballarat Football Netball Club acknowledges its plays on lands traditionally owned by the Wadawurrung people and pays respects to elders past and present, and in particular to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have been associated with our club.

Hall of Fame and Life Member inductions

We had the great honour of inducting two Hall of Famers and three Life Members at our AGM on Monday, 8 May.

Football superstars Colin Hunt and John Polkinghorne were added to our prestigious Hall of Fame in recognition of their stellar football careers, while Ray Gluyas, Richard Start and Murray Loader were made life members for their tireless efforts for our club over many years. Congratulations to all – and thank you for all you have given to our club over many years.

Colin, John, Ray, Murray and Richard will be formally honoured Hall of Fame/Life Members luncheon at the Sports Club on May 27 when we play Sebastopol.

Financial update

At the AGM, members were given an update on the financial results of both the North Ballarat Football Netball Club and the North Ballarat Sports Club.

The NBFNC recorded a loss of $168,000 and the NBSC recorded a loss of $1,064,098. After writing off assets of $829,475 and depreciation and amortization of $335,707, the Sports Club recorded a cash profit of approximately $100,000.

The results are disappointing in both cases, and the reasons for the performance are complex. Both boards are committed to working together to turn them around. That work started some early in 2022 and as a result, both organisations produced better results that was anticipated at one stage during the year.

Our new General Manager, Patrick Thornton, has been working to consolidate this work and has already made some changes which will improve both the bottom line and the experience of members and guests to the Sports Club.

What can members do to help? It is as simple as visiting the club with family and friends and enjoying the hospitality on offer. We look forward to seeing you there!

The AGM saw new members elected to the board. After 12 months as Chair of NBFNC. Ange Carey had to step back from the role due to work commitments, but remains a member of the board.

Amalgamation of boards

After the AGM, the two boards met and agreed to begin a process to amalgamate and become one board governing both the NBFNC and the NBSC.

An amalgamation would require the support of the membership via a vote and our first step is to prepare information for members so they can fully understand the reasoning and benefits of merging the two boards and moving to a single governance process.

The process is in its very early stages and members will receive further information on the process in the coming months. In the meantime, if you have any questions or comments, please speak with a board member.

Commonwealth Games update

Members may have seen some media coverage this week referencing a move by our club to Miners Rest to allow for the Commonwealth Games to be staged at Mars Stadium.

NBFNC has not been offered, nor agreed to, any move to Miners Rest. We were invited to attend the media announcement the evening before it was held.

While NBFNC is supportive of Commonwealth Games being held in Ballarat in 2026 and the opportunities it will bring to our city, we are committed to ensuring our club is not unfairly or unreasonably disadvantaged. We continue to seek clarification from the State Government and City of Ballarat on the full implications of the Games for our Club, including the nature of facilities proposed at Miners Rest and the timing and extent of disruptions. We have stressed to both the City of Ballarat and the State Government that any alternative facilities need to be fit-for-purpose for both footballers and netballers at junior and senior levels, and accommodate not just our playing needs, but our social and fundraising needs.

We are mindful that we are not the only club who will be disrupted by this move and want to ensure that alternative facilities will work for our competitors as well.

New netball facilities

The latest advice we have from the City of Ballarat is that our new netball rooms will be finished in mid-July. This is more than 12 months after the schedule completion date and is disappointing, but we do look forward to having these facilities ready to use.

We have raised our concerns with council around the potentially dangerous mix of traffic and pedestrians in the area and have asked council to re-instate portable toilets in the precinct to avoid the need to cross the car park. We have also asked for some signage or a pedestrian walkway to be clearly marked to help ensure the safety of people as they move between Mars Stadium and the netball courts.

Players, officials and supporters are asked to take extra care in the precinct.

Club 500 opportunity

Our Club 500 is an important fundraiser for our club. We currently have limited spare spots in the weekly draw.

Entry is $20 a week and a 12-month commitment is required. As well as the weekly $500 draw, there is an annual $2000 draw.

Club mourns passing of Barry Duffy

North Ballarat Football Club mourns death of stalwart Barry Duffy

NAME the role and quiet, hard-working volunteer Barry Duffy likely stepped into it to help North Ballarat Football Club.

The Roosters are mourning the death of the club stalwart, who died last week aged 81. North Ballarat club historian Stanley Roberts, who had known Mr Duffy since they were children growing up in Ballarat, said Mr Duffy was a great all-rounder serving on committees and in odd handyman jobs about the club.

Mr Duffy was best known about Northern Oval as a long-serving barman for North Ballarat Sports Club who was also heavily involved in club fundraising.

He was a North Ballarat Football Club member for 60 years and was elevated to a life membership in 1982.

A motor mechanic by trade, Mr Duffy became involved in the club when his sons were juniors in the 1970s, serving on the junior committee including a post as treasurer. From there, Mr Duffy joined various sub-committees from juniors to seniors where needed, from liquor control to entertainment and social committees.

Mr Duffy took up a job behind the bar for the sports club after his retirement and became a beloved well-known figure pouring drinks.

As a barman, Mr Duffy also spent time working for colourful Ballarat identity "Shocka" Walker, whose family owned and ran the Miller's Arms in Doveton Street for almost 50 years. Mr Roberts said Mr Duffy was a "quiet bloke" and true bootsman, who would do anything and everything to help the club.

Mr Duffy was also a supportive figure in North Ballarat's successful push to join the Victorian Football League in 1996.

This was a move that helped elevate football as a whole in the region to a new level and opportunities. Mr Duffy, whose wife Patricia is deceased, is survived by his four sons Andrew, Mark, David and Matthew and five grandchildren.

North Ballarat Football and Sports Clubs has officially paid tribute to Mr Duffy as "one of our most respected life members" and a "valued active volunteer".
